FELTING/FULLING THE BEANIE:
Put the crocheted hat into a zippered pillow case. This is necessary to protect the pump in your washing machine.

Put the beanie and a couple pair of old jeans into the washing machine on “hot” cycle, small load, fastest agitation. Add a very small amount of liquid dish washing soap (not dishwasher soap).

Let the machine agitate the beanie for 8 minutes. Stop the machine and check the progress of the beanie. If it’s still too big, (I put a shower cap on my head and try it on), reset to the beginning of the wash cycle. Recheck it every 2 minutes. It can felt in a hurry at this stage. Don’t let the washer spin. It takes 16 minutes in my washer. But times vary by machine and water temperature.

Remove the hat from the machine and rinse the soap out in a sink. Squeeze as much water out as possible without wringing. Then wrap in a towel to absorb excess water. Then shape it as you desire. You can use a bowl, mannequin head or your own head. Don’t laugh, the first one I made that’s what I did. Now I have the perfect flower pot. Allow the hat to air dry. Trim any loose ends.

CROCHETED LITTLE FLAPPED BAG

APPROXIMATE SIZE:
Before felting, 14 inches wide, 12 inches tall
After felting, 8.75 inches wide, 6.5 inches tall
Strap after felting, 32 inches
Flap after felting, 8 inches long, 2.5 inches wide

MATERIALS:
Worsted weight feltable yarn, approximately 5 ounces
K crochet hook for bag
½ inch Fender washer 1 ½ inch in diameter
J crochet hook for weighted flap
I crochet hook for straps

GAUGE:
Unimportant, but bag should be worked loosely.

PATTERN NOTES:
1. Read instructions all the way through before beginning.
2. Check your bag often during the felting process
3. I blocked my bag on a book that is 8.5 wide by 1.25 thick.
4. After pulling bag into shape and getting it on the book, I place a second book on top of the flap to get it nice and flat.

INSTRUCTIONS:

With main color, ch 38

ROUND 1: Make 2 sc in 2nd chain from hook, sc in each chain (35) to last chain. Work over yarn tail for remainder of this round. 3 sc in last ch. Work in the unused loops on opposite side of starting chain, sc in each chain. (36 stitches) Join with slip stitch in top of first sc. [76 sc]

ROUNDS 2-26: Ch 2 (this counts as turning ch and not the first stitch), hdc in each st around. [76 hdc]

ROUNDS 27-28: Ch 1, sc in each st around. [76 sc]

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

WEIGHTED FLAP
½” Zinc Fender Washer 1.5” in diameter
J Crochet hook

ROUND 1: 30 sc in fender washer, slipstitch in first st to join. This is the right side. Stitches should be very crowded, this is so that when it is felted it will completely cover the fender washer.(30 sts)
ROUND 2: Ch 1, DO NOT turn. Sc in 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat around, slipstitch in first sc to join. Ch 3 do not turn. (36 sts)

Now work in rows.
ROW 1: Ch 2 do not turn, dc in 3 sc, hdc in 3 sc, sc in 3 sc, hdc in 3 sc, dc in 3 sc. [15 sts]
ROW 2: Ch 2, turn, dc in 3 sts, hdc in 3 sts, sc in 3 sts, hdc in 3 sts, dc in 3 sts. [15 sts]
ROW 3-12: Ch 2, hdc across row. [15 sts] Don’t fasten off.

Flatten bag and mark center stitch on one side. Mark center stitch on flap.
ROW 13: Ch 1, turn. With wrong sides together, center flap matching the marked stitch to marked stitch on bag. Work sc in each st through both layers.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

CORD FOR SHOULDER STRAPS: Make 2
ROUND 1: With I hook, leaving an 8 inch tail, ch 2, 4 sc in second chain from hook. Do not join.
ROUNDS 2-until 36 inches long: Sc in back loop of next sc. Continue working sc in back loop until cord is 36 inches long. You will be working from the inside of a tube.
Fasten off leaving an 8 inch tail.

ATTACH STRAPS:
Lay bag flat and mark an inch to each side of flap. Mark front at corresponding points. These four markers are the locations where you will sew the ends of the straps in place. Using a yarn needle attach the straps at the markers. (One strap to each side.) When sewing the strap, place the bottom of the strap about an inch below the top edge. Reinforce the area where the handles and bag are joined by weaving the tail back and forth through the stitches several times. Remove all markers.
